Review Article Example: Global Preparedness in Drastic Evolution of Diseases
Technological advancement greatly influences the improvement of medicine and the health service industry globally. However, despite that fact, people, especially those, lives under a low-income country that has limited access to advance health service and technology, often find themselves at the disadvantage particularly when the infectious disease becomes epidemic. Moreover, poverty, ineffective intervention, low-quality health system, and lack of scientific researches are the main factor affecting the readiness of the global community to fight the evolving diseases (Jamison et al., and World Health Organization 15).
Since the beginning of the 21st century, the evolution of diseases has been rapidly emerging, and many factors that contribute to the transmission of the disease have been discovered, such as the association of wild animals to the pandemic spread of the virus.
For instance, the pandemic spread of the middle east respiratory syndrome coronavirus, also known as MERS-CoV, greatly affects many countries, including Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and the Republic of Korea in 2012, which killed approximately 35% of the reported infected patients. The virus was believed to originate from camel and can be transmitted from humans to humans through direct or close contact (“Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV).” 2019).
Furthermore, the emergence of other infectious diseases like the Zika virus, SARS-CoV, Ebola virus, and H7N9 have been a subject for a decade to spread awareness and prevent the repetition of the tragic history (“How the four biggest outbreaks since the start of this century shattered some long-standing myths” 2015).
According to the World Health Organization (20), Known diseases still impose severe damage as it is continuously evolving in nature, and the readiness of global public health is still a subject for a discussion. Currently, a new pandemic threat emerged in society, which is more violent and aggressive. The diseased was temporarily called COVID-19, a new strain of pathogen that belongs to the family of coronavirus like MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV (World Health Organization 4).
Worldwide, the current confirmed infected by COVID-19 is more than 100, 000 and approximately about 3600 death has been reported (“COVID-19 CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK”). Just like MERS-CoV, the spread of this new biothreat can be through direct or close human contact, and the origin of this new strain virus is associated with animals (World Health Organization 8).
In response to the COVID-19 virus outbreak, the world bank is helping developing countries to strengthen the health system and contained the spread of the diseased (“World Bank Group Announces Up to $12 Billion Immediate Support for COVID-19 Country Response”). On the other hand, despite the increase of infected cases, Singapore, had been successfully contained the spread of the disease (“Singapore Contained Coronavirus. Could Other Countries Learn from Its Approach?”).
Overall, the evolution of known and unknown diseases is unstoppable. However, Global intervention and financial support, intensive preparation, and extensive research must be implemented to improve and strengthen the security of the global community.
